Holistic Learner Support

Standard 7 - Holistic Learner Support

This standard emphasizes the importance of providing multi-dimensional supports to students.

    1. Establish and Communicate Availability

Clearly communicate your office hours and how students can meet with you (in-person, virtually, or

by appointment). Use this time to support student understanding of course material, clarify

assessment expectations, and offer guidance on academic or program-related matters.

    1. Maintain Clear and Responsive Communication

Ensure students know how to contact you and what to expect in terms of response time

(e.g., within 24–48 hours during business days). Model respectful, consistent, and student-centered

            communication practices.

    1. Promote Awareness of Academic and Technical Support Services

Respect the whole student. Recognize that student support may be required in a

variety of areas of a student’s life. Provide clear information about available student

            supports, such as:

  • Academic tutoring
  • Learner Assistance Centre
  • Elders
  • Student counseling and academic advising services
  • Library and research supports
  • IT Help Desk and technical support

    1. Foster Connection with Library Resources

Introduce students to relevant library tools and resources, including databases, research guides,

and citation tools. Encourage the development of strong academic research skills.

    1. Use Early Intervention Strategies

Monitor student progress and initiate early support when concerns arise. Take responsibility to

use the institution’s Early Intervention process to help students stay on track and access appropriate

            supports.

    1. Cultivate a Welcoming and Inclusive Learning Environment

Foster a climate of respect, belonging, and cultural safety for all learners. Promote open, inclusive

dialogue and invite students to bring their diverse experiences and perspectives into course

           discussions and activities.
