Standard 8

Accessibility and Usability

This standard focuses on ensuring the course is accessible and relevant to all students.

    1. Design with Accessibility for All Learners in Mind

Respect the diverse ability, experiences, and contexts of all learners. Create courses that are inclusive and accessible to all students. Ensure that barriers to access are minimized through thoughtful, equitable course design and delivery.

    1. Apply Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Principles

            Follow UDL guidelines by providing:

  • Multiple means of representation (e.g., text, visuals, audio)
  • Multiple means of expression (e.g., writing, video, presentation)
  • Multiple means of engagement (e.g., choice in topics, interactive content)

    1. Ensure Accessibility of All Course Materials

Confirm that all digital content meets accessibility standards:

  • Use captioned videos
  • Include alt text for images
  • Provide screen reader–friendly documents
  • Avoid scanned PDFs or inaccessible formats
  • Use descriptive hyperlinks (not just "click here")

    1. Maintain a Consistent and Intuitive Course Design

Organize course content in a clear, predictable, and easy-to-navigate structure, especially in

UCNLearn. Use consistent headings, menus, and formatting to help students quickly locate materials

and understand course expectations. Show reciprocity by inviting student feedback on accessibility

            and usability.
